From the looks of it the Red Hot Auctions seem to be a lot more appealing than your $1 Auctions. I think your $1 auctions are too wage to be attractive. Not knowing where the property is located, your pictures not being a true image to give a clue, not being able to calculate the approximate airfare to get to the mystery property deters a lot of people from bidding. I think you should revise the criteria for your $1 Auctions to make them more attractive. Just a suggestion... but for now, this VIP Contributor is checking out the Red Hot Auctions more closely and ignor the $1 Auctions...
I agree with Lhbrown -- the potential expense of the flights has put me off bidding on the $1 auctions. Perhaps it would be worth having an additional Red Hot Auction per day instead of the $1 auction?
It would be great to see some more European destinations in the Red Hot Auctions!
Although I agree with others' sentiments regarding the $1 auctions and don't really see myself bidding since I lack any of that spontaneity (I research each and every trip to the nth degree before booking) I don't think LL will discontinue them as long as they continue to create buzz and bids, which they definitely are! I don't think we in the community are going to be the influence there....money talks and the bidders are still bidding. I am, however, enjoying the red hot auctions and would love to see more of them.
I also find these more appealing than the $1 auctions! I looked this morning and did not find a red hot auction - checked the Hot Deals under Auction heading Is there another place I should be looking?
I am like you, I do my research, and I like to know where I am going and what the $ bottom line of a trip will be. You are right, it is a great marketing tool and people are bidding on the $1 autions and are driving the price up to where it almost is no bargain anymore.... I have not heard from anyone of the LL Community who has won a $1 auction. Perhaps when the frenzzy and novelty of these $1 auctions has died down there will be bargains to be had. ....What really turned me off of these $1 auctions was when LL announced that the pictures were fake and bore no clue to the resort.... How devious can you get.... For now, I too will look at the Red Hot Auctions more closely. They seem to be more reasonable, at least you know where you are going....
I noticed omegaet had put in a bid for the last $1., & I was really hoping he would win so that we could get some feedback on these type pf auctions. I also think that the LL Moderators should revise the $1. auctions to make it more interesting for us, and profitable for them at the same time.
I'm sure you're right in that the $1 auctions will continue as they have proven so popular -- though in all likelihood I'll continue to be a spectator rather than a player in that particular game as like some others here I tend to do a lot of homework on my destination before travelling so the idea of a mystery destination isn't as appealing (though I still enjoy trying to figure out the clues just for the fun of it). When you have limited holiday time you want to make sure that you're spending it somewhere you'll really enjoy.
On the other hand, if the auction really did sell for $1 (or a few hundred dollars) that might inspire me to take a punt. Maybe we'll see the prices drop over time as the novelty factor wears off.
I really hope that someone who wins one of the auctions comes back and tells us what it was like!
