Rainforest: Sandoval Lake Lodge

the last time we went to Peru we had told the folks at orient express we were looking for about 4 nights in the Amazon jungle area of southern Peru and Sandoval lake lodge was one of the places they recommended - it is not 5 star luxury but the location is 5 star - the only lodge in the Tambopato reserve on the lakefront and the one of the big pluses is this lake is one of the few areas left in the Amazon area with a healthy population of giant river otters - it was awesome to get up each morning and go to the lake shore and watch these magnificent 6 foot long critters come out of their dens and fish for their breakfast - we even saw some babies. The guides were excellent, the food was good, hot water in the showers. Electricity is via generators and they get turned off around 11pm - was really cool to sit on the deck in the dark and listen to the night sounds!
One of the nearby lodges is sometimes offered here on LL and was also recommended by OE - we chose the Sandoval lodge specifically for the otters and it was worth the trip
