I've tried everything from packing all black garments to rolling each garment to squeeze in more. I've been thinking about using those vacuum packed storage bags. The only thing is that everything needs to be pressed and ironing while on vacation isn't my idea of a good time. Any suggestions welcome.
I am a bit of a self-proclaimed master of packing light and I would be more than happy to make some suggestions. One question, though. Have you been able to figure out what is in your luggage that is taking up the most room?
The link above does give some great hints. Below is what I have noticed are common overpacking errors. I think more than any of these tips is that if you're going somewhere where it matters what you wear, then most likely you can buy your way out of any underpacking. Don't be afraid to underpack.
Packing too many clothes: I would tend to disagree on those that overly criticize bringing clothes that you won't bring back. It's a bit like killing two birds with 1 stone. First, you clean out your closet more regularly (i.e. since most of us LL people are big travelers). However, I think your goal vs the other post is to dress well. Try a Sheath dress that will go from casual to evening by adjusting shoes or accessorizing. While some suggested black - which is classic - I prefer to pack in tones. If it's the winter, than black or brown and one other color (if blue in hue, choose silver toned accessories, if brown/orange, choose gold accessories not both). If it's the summer, choose white or khaki as your base one other color. In any case, try to find pieces that you can mix and match.
Toiletries: As for styling and make-up products, I would also work with the rule of bringing things that are disposable on your way back. Also, many times you will get samples from various make-up/lotion places. These come in really small almost wetnap type packaging. I love these as they are even smaller than plastic bottles.
Shoes: I have a lot of friends that make the mistake of bringing too many . The bulkiest shoes should be worn on your feet coming and going (boots/sneakers). Allow yourself 2 more (one heel and one flat). If you absolutely must have 1 more pair that is uber comfy, bring the one that is the best candidate for "what not to wear" and try not to bring it back. That includes old sneakers that have seen their last days.
Accessories: 1 belt max, a scarf (in the tones that you've chosen), a jewelry like watch. Rings and earrings are small, so go wild. However, if in doubt just bring a set of pearls. Also, try to find a "packable purse" that is extra small and adorable. It should be in a color tone that complements the color scheme you've chosen.
If you're going to a winter weather location/skiing, it's far harder. I echo those who suggest doing a load of laundry.
I hope this is helpful. Good luck!!
