I have kind of a strange question; has anyone out there ever gone on a "Moose Safari"?
The one I am looking into is in a remote area of Maine - kind of arduous to get to. However it could be one of those once in a lifetimes experiences. Could also be a lot of hassle for not that big a deal. I've been thinking about going for a couple of years and can't quite decide if it would be worth it.
If anyone can shed any more light on this I would appreciate it.
Apparently, one does not even have to travel to Maine to see moose. I live less than an hour north of Manhattan, in Connecticut, and a moose was recently hit by a car while trying to cross the highway!
We tried several times to see Moose - it was my quest for years - twice to Maine did not produce Moose but Canada ...now that is where you will definitely see Moose! The ice fields parkway and around Marmot basin ski lodge in Jasper there are loads of Moose around. We've been summer and winter and always found moose on the drive between Calgary and Jasper - Lake Louise Banff etc Can't wait -we booked Cathedral Mountain Lodge through LL for July - on Lake Moraine...sure to see more Moose! happy hunting...Funtimes PS my next quest is going to be for whales what do you think - San Juan Islands off Seattle and Van Couver or Cabo???
Funtimes, that is a great suggestion! I love Canada and am always looking for an excuse to go. The scenery is amazing, great wildlife viewing and the people and so warm and welcoming. We actually were vacationing outside of Victoria on 9/11/2001. We got stranded there for over a week and the genuine caring and concern from everyone we met (we are New Yorkers) was so heartwarming and something I will never forget.
As for the whale watching, I actually have a friend (that I met in 2001 on that trip) who is a "whale spotter" in Victoria. She says that in Victoria and north is very good for whale watching(go with a reputable company) but the further toward Vancouver you go the more "commercial" it has become. Boats crowd the poor things, stress them out and disrupt the migratory patterns.
Please let us know about your upcoming trip - I am very interested!
I haven't really heard of a "Moose Safari"... however, last year a moose was sighted in Albany, NY at a traffic circle, and some idiot promptly shot it....
We were in the Tetons in Wyoming a few years back and I came across a baby moose. I whipped out my camera and started taking pictures following the baby moose. Suddenly the mother appeared and started to charge me.... I never ran so fast in my life....
