Hi,

Weiss-Blau-Reisen http://www.weiss-blau-reisen.de/Home...xcursions.html is offering a number of tours to explore King Ludwig II's impressive castles and surrounding areas like Oberammergau, Ettaler monastery and Schloss Linderhof. The "Linderhof Castle - Ettal monastery and Oberammergau tour" starts from Garmisch with stops in Partenkirchen and Farchant and leaves mondays and fridays in the afternoon at 12:50 pm. The price is about 14 Euros per adult and 7 Euros for children.

All towns are about 20 to 25 kilometers from Garmisch-Partenkirchen and they can be reached via Oberau and the mountain-road to Ettal.

In the Ammermountains and the Graswang valley there is Schloss Linderhof. You have about 2 hours time there. Linderhof is the smallest castle that King Ludwig IInd built in 1878, and the only one he completed and actually lived in till his death. The Rococo age experienced a revival. The richly ornamented facade of this relatively small place conceals a world of opulence, radiant with gold and gleaming mirrors with wall hangings and paintings, velvet and silk, crystal chandeliers, lapis lazula, malachite and porcelain. The main features of this beautifully landscaped park are the St. Anna Chapel, the "Koenigshaeuschen" (King's Cottage), the ancient Royal Lime Tree with a platform where the king sometimes took breakfast, the Moorish Kiosk witht the Peacock Thron, the Moroccan House, Hunding's Hut and the Hermitage of Gurnemanz. An "open sesame" rock leads to the artificial Venus Grotto with a waterfall and lake designed to show the interior of the Venusberg, the home of Venus, a setting in Wagner's opera "Tannhaeuser".

In the big beautifully landscaped garden there is a fountain, which in the summer, starts it's water play every hour on the hour.

If you like to visit the casle go to the "Zentralkasse" near the gift-shops where you can purchase the tickets. Here you get a card for the tour. On the card you see the time you have to be at the castle entrance where your tour starts. You need about 10 minutes to walk to the castle from the ticket office. There are also tours in English. The enrance fee to the casle includes the grotto and the teahouse. The entrance to the park and the ground is free.

Oberammergau is internationally known for its Passion Plays. They take place every 10 years, and 2010 is the year. The natives of Oberammergau show the life and rebirth of Jesus Christ. Worth seeing are also the beautifully painted houses (the paintings being called "Lueftelmalerei) which are quite unique in this area. Worth noting are also the many wood carving shops and the Kaethe Wolfahrt Christmas Shop. You have one hour there with the tour before returning to Garmisch-Partenkirchen about 6:00 PM.
