Live Chat with Caribbean Travel Expert & Writer Donna Heiderstadt
On January 26, 2012 Caribbean travel expert and writer Donna Heiderstadt joined Luxury Link travelers for a Facebook Q&A Live Chat.
Q: What is the best island for couples in St. Vincent and Grenadine and what type of packages does Luxury Link offer?
Donna: I recommend Canouan Island, which has a larger resort. Palm Island
which is featured on Luxury Link, is a private island. I also recommend Petit St. Vincent because its very secluded - it has just 24 cottages and provides a very intimate feel. Bequia is a old yet underdeveloped island with some smaller boutique resorts. Luxury Link packages offer a variety of stay options and the concierge team is always willing to help work with travelers to find a travel package that fits their needs.
Q: How have Caribbean islands been impacted by reduced air service in the past few years?
Donna: From New York, JetBlue provides a lot of access to the area. A few island are building new airports to accommodate larger jets, other airlines such as Delta are assisting where other airlines are pulling back on flights.
Q: Where's the best place to experience the "spookiness" of the Bermuda Triangle?
Donna: Hmmm - The Bahamas
fall into it - there is an island by the name of Cat Island - it has ruins and is very spooky on a moonlit night! Make sure to tell people where are you are going when you arrive to keep track of you! This is also home to Sidney Poitier's home.
Q: I don't have a passport; what islands can I visit without one?
Donna: Puerto Rico
, St. Thomas
and St. Croix
are the islands where U.S. citizens will not need a passport.
Q: When does hurricane season occur?
Donna: Official hurricane season is from June - November but the Caribbean covers a larger area so not all islands will be affected by a storm. If you travel during that time, you can expect fewer crowds and lower rates but be sure to keep an eye on the weather
Q: I want to go to a Caribbean Island next winter for three months and bring my dog from the US. Which one is easiest to get him in with shortest inspection time?
Donna: Puerto Rico, Dominican Republic
, St. Martin
and the U.S. Virgin Islands seem to require a health and inoculation certificate from a vet. It needs to be dated 10 days prior to entry. I would also advise you check the local government website for additional information.
