Costa Baja Resort & Spa La Paz, Baja California Mexico
Our LL package included the following:
Super suite marina view with an upgrade to sea view if possible we were upgraded
$100 spa credit which I used!
Complimentary wireless internet
We arranged with the resort to have a car pick us up at the Cabo airport for a very reasonable price. The driver was waiting for us on our arrival and we began the 2 ½ hour ride to La Paz and the resort. We had a private driver and a nice scenic ride passing through Todos Santos on the way to La Paz a very nice little town on the Pacific which I wish we had more time to explore.
We arrived at the resort and were escorted to reception by the very friendly and efficient door men. The reception personnel were very welcoming and offered us a nice refreshing drink which was very welcome after the long ride. They had all the information regarding our LL package with one exception for some reason they had us listed as paying on arrival which was very disconcerting. Luckily I had our receipt which showed that we had in fact paid and they said they never received the money from LL what a shock that was! They had never worked with LL before and they were confused as how to proceed and said we should call LL to see what happened I said it was a problem between LL and the hotel and that they were the ones that needed to call LL which they did. We were left sitting in the lobby while this was getting straightened out which was getting a bit annoying as 30 minutes had passed by this time. Finally the manager had us taken to our room while the problem was fixed. Eventually it was and all was right with the world. The manager apologized. They did want to put a $100 per day hold on our credit card for any incidentals but I said no that we would pay as needed if we purchased any drinks, etc. which confused them but they agreed. I had been in contact for a while with their wonderful concierge, Origami, but she never mentioned anything in all of our emails about the resort not thinking they were paid, although, maybe she was not aware of this as the concierge is usually not involved in these matters. It turns out that LL paid their home office in the USA and for some reason that information was never conveyed to Costa Baja.
Costa Baja was the 1st 5 star resort in the La Paz area and I have to agree that it is a very nice resort on the Gulf of California with a beautiful, private white sand beach and private beach club, a 250 slip double basin marina (with magnificent yachts parked there during our stay, including the Apple CEO private yacht), tennis courts and a Gary Player designed golf course set up in the hills overlooking the resort and the sea we are not golfers but the course looked very challenging! There is a hotel and separate condo areas, all in all, a large resort complex! The beach club has a very nice infinity pool, Jacuzzi, plenty of seating and a bar/restaurant area. Very nice spa where I had a wonderful 90 minute facial one of the best I ever had. I made good use of my $100 spa credit! The hotel and condo complexes all have their own pools. Accommodations are available in the hotel or in one of the condos. There are also 2 nice restaurants on the property and 3 restaurants in the marina area.
We had a super suite sea view which was very nice and very spacious. It had 2 separate balconies overlooking the sea, separate bedroom, very large bathroom with a huge open shower and separate soaking tub (large plush towels, fluffy bathrobes and nice locally made toiletries) and a combination living and small kitchen area. Large flat screen TVS in the living room and the bedroom, coffee/tea maker, refrigerator, and iron and iron board. Very comfortable king size bed, sofa and chairs in the living room, counter with bar stools in the kitchen area. Comfortable seating on the balconies we spent most of our room time out on the balcony just soaking in the beautiful views.
The resort also has golf carts to zip you all over the property the golf club, the beach club, and the condos on the hill and to the marina. When a staff member sees you walking around they quickly offer you a lift in the cart which we took them up on a few times golf carts are fun to ride around in ;-) There is also a free shuttle bus which takes you into La Paz city it stops at various places around the resort and takes you to the main square in La Paz it runs every 2 hours. The only change I would suggest is to have the last shuttle from La Paz be later than 7:30pm it would have been nice to spend a little more time in the evening on the Malecon.
Our continental breakfast each morning was in the Mosaic restaurant which is on the lower level of the hotel and is very nice. Breakfast each morning consists of a large and varied buffet setup with the continental portion comprising just one part of the buffet. Continental was fine with us as it consisted of bagels, breads, juices, meats and cheeses, coffee and tea we really did not feel the need for anything additional. Breakfast was excellent as was the service. We also had lunch in Mosaic on our arrival day and dinner on our last night food was good but not great, it was also a bit expensive but considering the resort itself I was not surprised at the prices. Considering how nice the breakfast was, I was surprised that the lunch and dinner were not as good. Service, however, is excellent and the staff friendly. There is also a more upscale restaurant, Steinbecks, that we did not eat in but it was usually pretty crowded both in the restaurant during meal times and in the bar amazing Tequila selections! There is also a small restaurant and bar at the beach club we did not eat here but did have quite a few pretty good and reasonably priced drinks while lounging around the pool and Jacuzzi.
We had 4 full days at the resort and we did a lot of water tours swimming with whale sharks, whale watching in Puerto Lopez Matteos (a long, full day trip) and swimming with sea lions which also included a boat ride around the various islets north of La Paz. Our last day we spent hanging out in La Paz which is a nice un touristy beach town and also the capital city of Baja California Sur if you are in La Paz you have to eat in Tres Virgenes one of the best meals we had on this Mexico trip and we heartily agree with the Trip Advisor reviews the best in La Paz!
All of the staff and especially the wonderful concierge staff, Origami and Estrella, made us feel welcome and were all very friendly and helpful. Each day when we passed through the lobby everyone always asked how our day was going, if we had fun on our tours and if they could help us with anything they all loved looking at the many pictures we had taken and were eager to hear about our adventures with the sea life and the concierges wanted to know all about the tour agencies we used so they could add them to the list of tour agencies they could recommend to guests (Jeff and I had actually found agencies they did not know about) When I went for my spa treatment, Estrella personally escorted me to the spa and introduced me to all the spa personnel what a nice touch.
I highly recommend this resort if you are planning a stay in La Paz, other than our check in glitch which was pretty quickly resolved, our stay was absolutely wonderful!
